My "Passionate People & Places of New Orleans" is going to press in time for Hanukkah and Christmas delivery. Melissa (it really does take 2 to make anything worthwhile happen) and I returned yesterday from a leather-hunting expedition with the first beautiful hide that will soon be cut and sewn for the covers. The first time I touched the rugged yet refined hide, I pictured Hemingway walking into a butcher shop in Cuba to select a cut of beef for dinner and a slice of raw hide for a journal he might assemble by hand for a return trip to Paris.
